Vermeer

A slim, high-waisted, cropped trouser specially commissioned and created from scratch. Inspired by the Baroque Shorts we released this summer — which turned out so well — this is a completely exclusive model designed to carry over that same essence.

Named after Vermeer, one of the iconic painters of the Baroque period, the piece features a black fabric originally dyed from navy, paired with contrasting lining. The addition of brass gold accents gives it a beautiful finishing touch.

The reason behind commissioning these trousers was, quite simply, a very personal one — I wanted a pair of slim, cropped pants to wear with my Guidi Rosellini ankle boots.

It also occurred to me that it had been years since I last wore slim-fitting trousers, which is probably why, when imagining the design, a slimmer silhouette came to mind more naturally than a wide one.

That said, I wasn’t looking to drastically change my style — rather, I wanted to find a balance where these trousers could serve as an extension of what I already wear.

Through adjusting the pattern, selecting different fabrics, and going through several rounds of samples, this final piece is what we ultimately arrived at.

The navy cotton-wool fabric has been double-dyed in black, resulting in a dark navy with a subtle bluish tone and beautiful natural variations in color. The dyeing process also included a water wash, adding just the right amount of shrinkage to give the fabric an exceptional texture and feel.

The cotton lining, dyed in a baige color, complements the outer fabric perfectly, creating a beautiful contrast that enhances the overall finish.

Although the fit is slim, it's not a tight, skin-hugging skinny — but for me, even this silhouette feels quite fresh.

There are no belt loops at the waist; instead, like the Baroque Shorts, adjusters with brass buckles are placed on both sides, allowing the waist to be tightened in 2 cm increments using adjustment holes.

Whether worn cinched or left looser, the trousers are designed to maintain a beautiful shape. The pattern has been carefully refined to taper from the hips to the thighs, creating a clean, streamlined look.

The longer rise creates a drop-crotch-like silhouette when worn low on the hips.

That said, wearing them high-waisted gives a sleek, elongated look to the legs, and the cropped length makes them pair perfectly with boots — exactly the styling I envisioned with the Ruggero.

Of course, in spring and fall, wearing them with low-cut shoes to show some ankle would also look great.

The cut-off hem is reinforced with backing fabric on the inside to prevent fraying, and all of this is done entirely by hand. From the double-welt pockets to the impeccably hand-stitched buttonholes and belt holes, as well as the hand-dyed outer fabric and lining, every detail reflects a level of craftsmanship that goes far beyond what you'd expect from a simple single-pleat trouser.

You can truly feel the character and depth that comes from this meticulous handiwork.

The fabric, both outer and lining, is neither too thick nor too thin, making these trousers suitable for three seasons — basically everything except the peak of summer.

Of course, when temperatures drop to single digits, especially in the low range, it can get a bit tough to wear them. But since they are lined, I actually found them surprisingly wearable even during Tokyo's winter when paired with boots. I ended up wearing them quite a lot from December through February.

Since the fabric has already been washed multiple times during the dyeing process and has shrunk to its final state, it should not shrink significantly from here on.

For that reason, I believe it should be fine to wash them on a delicate or gentle cycle in a washing machine. However, as there is a possibility of some color fading during the first few washes, it might be best to wash them separately at first.

Please note that tumble drying is not recommended, and while the care tag says "Dry clean or hand wash," any machine washing should be done at your own discretion.

I imagine that, like myself, there are quite a few customers who don’t usually wear slim-fitting trousers. I’m curious to know how this piece comes across to you.

Of course, for those who are already accustomed to slim silhouettes, it will feel natural, but I would especially love for those who, like me, find this shape refreshing and new to give it a try. It’s a piece that I think is well worth stepping out of your usual style for.
